Kowie Nature Reserve Hiking Trail, Port Alfred, Sunshine Coast, Eastern Cape.

Two hour hike through the Kowie River Nature Reserve. Abundant animal life includes bushbuck, duiker, blue duiker, tree dassies (hyrax), vervet monkeys, mountain tortoises, Cape clawless otter and other small carnivores. Yellow footprints mark the walk downhill in a clockwise direction through thick bush to the riverbank upstream of Centenary Park.  It continues past the old Air Force jetty and round Windy Reach Corner as far as Cob Hole.   Here it leaves the river and climbs up a steep hill in a wide arc to the car park and the ranger’s quarters.  There are braai and toilet facilities and the area is patrolled by rangers who live in the reserve. Open from 07h00 to 17h00.

Travel for 5-km on the R67 towards Bathurst. Turn left at the SANTA turnoff and drive past the hospital, 43 Air School and the Balancing Dam. Park inside the fenced off area.  You can also drive down to the picnic spot (a rough road). Port Alfred is on the R72 west of East London, which is at the intersection of the N2 with the N6.
