Hiking, Trails and Routes

ID #3027

Dome Highland Trails, Venterskroon, North-West Province.

Visit the largest meteorite impact crater on earth – the Vredefort Dome.  Trails are situated around the historical mining village of Venterskroon (which incidentally is not shown on some maps of the area). Trails and activities include:

•    Hiking trails include the Rooderand 7-km day hike and the following three 2-day trails

    26-km Rooihaas offers variety and challenge to beginners and the adventurous alike.
    22-km Summit Trail follows a scenic route on the summit of the Rooderand Mountains.
    The Old Mine Trail is a circular trail of 24-km and offers a variety of historical sites, panoramic views and unspoilt nature.
•    Canoeing and hiking are combined into the popular Boot&Paddle package that includes a 1-day hike of 16-km, one day of canoeing 12-km on the Vaal plus lunch. The Drift-to-Drift is a memorable 2-day canoe safari and includes still water as well as grade 1 and 2 rapids.  The first night is spent at basecamp and the second at a unique bushcamp on the riverbank. The Sundowner is a tranquil late afternoon canoe trip to an island in the Vaal River and champagne at sundown plus a traditional dinner.
•    Mountain biking (cycling) is popular and includes a variety of trails.
•    Abseiling or rock climbing are combined in the Boot&Rope Package for hikers looking for adventure. The trail includes a 16-km hike and rock climbing or abseiling the following day.
•    Rafting can be combined with abseiling or rock climbing in the Raft&Rope package.  The rafting and rock climbing is supervised by qualified instructors and is not intended for the feint-hearted.
•    Whitewater rafting or climbing can be arranged for those with a little more time.
•    Birding can be a rewarding experience in this area with its variety of habitats. Bird lists are available.

We have four camps offering backpacker-style accommodation:

•    Badplaas and Bundu Camps on the farm Tierfontein. Each accommodates up to 28 people.  They are less than 1-km apart.  There is no electricity but hot water is available form a wood burning boiler at Boplaas and gas geysers at both camps. Lapas and outdoor cooking facilities are provided, and there is a swimming dam at Boplaas.  Activities include hiking, exploring the ruins of early settlements dating as far back as 500AD, and visiting the Tygerfontein battlefield and blockhouses of the Anglo-Boer War.
•    Base Camp at Venterskroon accommodates up to 100 in historical cottages and the old stables and jail. The accommodation is dormitory style with 2-6 beds per room.  There is a fully equipped conference room for up to 25 delegates, a central dining room and kitchen, self-catering facilities, lapas, a swimming pool, and volleyball and jukskei courts. Restaurant and hot water available.  Activities include hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, and abseiling.
•    Oudewerf Camp on the farm Rooderand accommodates 24 in a stone cottage. No electricity but hot water is available from a wood-burning boiler.  There is a lapa with outdoor cooking facilities. Activities include hiking, birding and mine tunnel exploration

Parys is on the R53 southeast of Potchefstroom, which is on the N12 southwest of Gauteng. Travel northwest on the R53 from Parys for approximately 12-km. Turn left onto a gravel road and travel a further 15-km towards Venterskroon. The base camp in Venterskroon is on the right, close to Ronnie’s Store – the only shop in town.  BLDome
