Hiking, Trails and Routes

Hiking in the Southern Drakensberg at Lotheni, Himeville, Drakensberg, Central Kwa-Zulu Natal.

In the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area at Kamberg, Lotheni, Vergelegen and Sani Pass. It extends from the southern boundary of Giant’s Castle Game Reserve to Bushman’s Neck and the Ngwagwane River and includes Highmoor, Mkhomazi, Lotheni, Vergelegen, Cobham and Garden Castle. Accommodation includes the Highmoor Camp and Caravan Site, a hutted camp at Kamberg, Bushman’s Neck Hotel, Lotheni, Sani Pass Hotel, Drakensberg Gardens Hotel, Eland Valley Holoiday Resort and Castleburn Leisure Resort.  There are numerous B&B’s at the nearby towns of Himeville, Underberg and Nottingham Road. The following hikes are available:

•    Ash Cave Trail. Fair (7.5 km, 4 hours),
•    Eagle trail. 6 hours
•    Hlathimbe Pass and Cave. Extreme (16 km, 6-7 hours),
•    Yellowwood Cave Tarn and Waterfall. Moderate (20 km, 2 days),

Note that with the exception of hiking trails and camping, all other reservations are made via Central Reservations in Pietermaritzburg.

Lotheni is west of Rosetta, which is on the R103 southwest of Mooi River, which is on the N3 northwest of Durban, which is at the intersection of the N2 with the N3. Road access to Highmoor and Kamberg are via Rosetta (30-km).  Loteni, Vergelegen and Sani Pass are approached from Underberg and Himeville, though it is possible to approach from Nottingham Road/Rosetta.
