Hiking the Central Drakensberg, Cathedral Peak, Winterton, Drakensberg, Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Cathedral Peak is in the Mlambonja Wilderness Area, which includes the Mlambonja and Ndema Valleys.  It is easily accessible via Winterton, and from the Loskop to Bergville Road. Accommodation includes the Cathedral Peak Hotel and the campsite at the base of Mike’s pass.  Cathedral peak dominates the Cathedral Range, a line of free-standing peaks extending from the escarpment edge and affords climber one of the best views of the Berg. It includes a number of climbs, as follows:

•    Cathedral Peak Hike. Extreme (10 km, 6-7 hours). Long arduous hike requiring a high level of fitness.
•    Contour Path – Cathedral peak to Ndedema. Moderate to severe. (3.5 km –3hours).
•    Contour Path – Ndedema to Monk’s Cowl. Moderate (27.5 km, 2 days).
•    Ganabu Ridge and Baboon Rock.  Severe (15 km, 6 hours).
•    Mlambonja Pass to Twins Cave. (Extreme (11 km, 6-8 hours).
•    Mlambonja Valley. Moderate (1.5-5.2 km, 0.5-2 hours).
•    Mushroom Rock. Fair (2 km, 1 hour).
•    Oqualweni Forest Walk. Easy (5.5 km, 2 hours).
•    Oqualweni Valley. Moderate (16.5 km, 5 hours).
•    Rainbow Gorge. Fair (5.5 km, 2 hours).
•    Tarn and Tryme Hills.
•    Tseketseke Camp Site.  Moderate to Severe (9.5 km, 4 hours).
•    Two Passes and Cleft Peak Escarpment Hike. Extreme (40 km, 3 days).
 

Note that, with the exception of bookings for hikes and camping, all reservations are made via the Central Reservations (see the web). Hikes and camping are however reserved at the address given below.

Cathedral Peak is west of Winterton, which is on the R600 southwest of Ladysmith, which is at the intersection of the N3 and the N11. APHicath
