Fitzpatrick Bird Communication Library, Transvaal Museum, Pretoria, Gauteng.

The library houses one of the largest audio-visual bird libraries in the Southern Hemisphere. It specialises in the sounds and visual material of African birds. It also has collections from selected families that form part of the Transvaal Museumís Bird Department specialist groups such as hornbills of the world.

The material forming the basis of the collection originated from the Sound Recording Division of the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology in Cape Town (Capetown). June Stannard who also ran the collection made most of the recordings. Tony Harris became the curator in 1976 and Laura Stratton was appointed as collection manager in 1979. During this period an attempt was made to drastically increase the holdings of the library and include all material related to bird communication such as slides and photographs of the birds as well as video and film clips of bird behaviour. Tony Harris left the library in 1992 and Anthony van Zyl joined in 1994 to team up with Laura Stratten in the management of the collection. It is currently managed by Alan Kemp, manager of the museum. BCFitz
