ID #1803

King George VI Art Gallery, St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth, Sunshine Coast, Eastern Cape.

A municipal museum with an independent board of trustees, it was opened on June 22 1956 to commemorate the 1947 royal visit. Collections are housed in two buildings framing the entrance to St George’s Park.  It consists of British art, international printmaking, South African art (particularly from the Eastern Cape), and oriental art (including Indian miniatures and Chinese textiles).  Because of limited exhibition space, art from the permanent collection is constantly rotated. Visitors wishing to see works not currently being exhibited may do so by appointment.  Features include:

•    Gallery shop: It offers an interesting collection of books, catalogues, cards, gifts and other items.
•    Art library: Established to make art reproductions available to the public.
•    Services to the Public: Guided tours, lectures and films. The gallery welcomes the opportunity to host cultural, professional and educational functions.
•    Educational Services: Teachers, schools and other educational groups. Contact the Communications Officer.
•    Reference library and archive: Covers aspects of art relating to the gallery’s collecting policy.  Members of the public may use the library by appointment for reference purposes.
•    Advice on works of art: Staff will assist with inquiries made by post, fax or telephone. Please note that no valuations will be given.
•    Conservation of Works of Art: The gallery has a well-equipped conservation studio that deals mainly with the restoration of oil paintings and gilded frames.
•    Art Gallery Association: The “Association of Friends” was founded in 1975 and plays a vital role in the development of the Gallery and its collections.

The gallery is open seven days a week except on January 1, Good Friday, Freedom Day, Workers Day, Youth Day and Christmas Day. Open on weekdays from 09h00 to 17h00 but closed on Tuesday mornings. Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 14h00 to 17h00. Art in the Park, on the first Sunday of the month from 09h00 to 14h00.
